What to Discuss at a Consultation With a Law Firm

Suzana Mikolova, December 12, 2021October 8, 2020

What to Discuss at a Consultation With a Law Firm

When it comes to turning to a law firm for help with your legal concern, you may not think you have options. You may be worried about who you can turn to that will listen to you and help you to get through this situation. The good news is there are attorneys available that can help in virtually any situation you may be dealing with. However, the first step is to have a consultation with these professionals. This is not only an opportunity to learn about your options, but it is also to gauge whether or not this team has what it takes to help you.

What a Consultation Is Not

A consultation with a law firm is an opportunity for you to sit down and talk about your situation and to find out if the person sitting across from you with the legal degree is the right one to help you to fight the situation. However, this is not an initial meeting requiring payment. You should not have to pay for the initial consultation, though you should not expect the company to offer you any billable services either. It is not a time to sign a contract. Rather, it is an opportunity to find out if you should sign the contract to work with this company.

Discuss Your Case At Length

Allow the attorney to discuss your situation with you openly. There is no reason to be anything but truthful with these professionals. You need to tell them everything you can. This will give the attorneys the ability to determine what the right course of action is for you. The lawyers will give you advice on how to move forward and what they can do for you. You should not leave out details because doing so could end up costing you in the long-term.

Determine the Cost

You should not leave this type of meeting without a price in place. What is it going to cost you to get the type of legal advice and help you need in this situation? Some companies charge a fee based on the types of services needed. This may be a flat fee. You may need to pay a retainer and then an hourly fee for other types of cases.

As you talk about your situation with the law firm, you should gauge whether or not these professionals have the time and ability to help you with your situation. Doing so can help you to avoid many of the risks you are dealing with right now, like not knowing what to do to get through this problem.
